UBER BUS STARTS IN EGYPT
The announcement was made already in December 2018: Egypt was to be the first country in the world with a Uber Bus Service. Now 15 months later the service has actually started and whats more besides routes within Cairo, Uber offers round-trip routes between Cairo and Alexandria and announced plans to expand to the rest of the country in the next few months.
The service is available on the Uber application under “Bus routes”, or by selecting trip destinations between Cairo and Alexandria. Each of the 8 routes route passes through nine pick-up and drop off points across Cairo and Alexandria. Enter the destination in the Uber-app, select the Bus option, review the fare, select the preferred pick-up timing, and then tap request. In the app the Bus will be tracked on the way to the pickup spot, and will wait there for only 2 minutes. “So don’t be late!” warns Uber. “There’s no need to wait to hail down and squeeze onto a crowded bus”, as Uber states in its press release. Uber Bus uses technology to reserve a seat on a clean, air-conditioned, and as the company says “high-quality bus”. When a ride is requested through the app, the traveller will see the possible timings to be booked and has the possibility to schedule a whole week ahead. The rides are shared with other Uber passengers, and that is the reason according to Uber that the price can be affordable.
The company assured that coronavirus safety measures will be in place, with passengers and drivers urged to wear face masks during trips. The maximum number of passengers has also been reduced to encourage distancing, the statement added, while sanitizers are provided in each bus.
Uber Bus Egypt was announced in 2018 as part of the company’s investment plan in Egypt, as it invests US $100 million over the next five years.
