OTOKAR TO PRODUCE IVECO BUSES
A surprising step in bus production. Iveco Bus signed an agreement with Turkey’s bus manufacturer Otokar Otomotiv to manufacture products under the Iveco Bus brand at Otokar's facilities in Sakarya, Turkey. The agreement was made with the intention that Iveco Bus is maintaining all regular activities at its existing manufacturing sites but it seeks expansion of its manufacturing capabilities.
The Otokar site in Sakarya will start producing Iveco Bus products in 2021 and the partnership will cover all existing models in the Iveco Bus portfolio for international distribution, as well as the production of a model specifically catered for markets in Eastern Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. The buses will be powered by engines from CNH Industrial brand FPT Industrial. At the existing manufacturing sites of Iveco Bus the Italian company will keep all regular activities for its current and future model generations including designing and manufacturing.
Sylvain Blaise, Head of the Global Bus Division at CNH Industrial: “Thanks to this cooperation we will be able to increase our manufacturing capabilities in order to respond to current and future market demand to support our continued growth, as well as giving us the opportunity to work jointly on future portfolio expansion. Furthermore, this partnership will benefit from future powertrain technologies under development at FPT Industrial.”
In his remarks in the press release Otokar's General Manager Serdar Görgüç, says with this agreement for production of Iveco Bus models the Otokar plant can operate more efficiently and effectively. He says Otokar will continue to market Otokar buses globally. He hints on a long-term cooperation for which this agreement is a first step.
At Otokar's plant in Sakarya there are 2,000 employees working. Otokar is a part of the Koç Group which combined revenues account for 8 percent of Turkey’s GDP, while its export volume amounts to 10 percent of Turkey’s total export volume.
