Despite all the talk about electric, hybrid and fuel cell buses as part of the solution for climate change, there is still room for 'old' energy solutions, because they are still very much needed. Czech city of Ostrava has ordered 37 Solaris Urbino 18 CNG buses. Not zero-emission but as Solaris puts it “environmentally friendly buses that will contribute to the improvement of the life quality of Ostrava’s residents”.

These articulated buses will be delivered within 12 months and be running for public transport operator Dopravní podnik Ostrava a.s. The total value of the contract, covering also a five-year warranty period for the commissioned vehicles, is 13 million euro. The buses are equipped with a 239 kW CNG engine. The engine will support the feature of cold start, meaning it facilitates ignition at very low external temperatures. Five tanks containing the compressed natural gas (CNG) will be placed on the roof. Their total capacity will amount to 1875 litres.

The capacity is up to 110 passengers. Next to two spaces for wheelchairs and prams or pushchairs, Solaris also managed to provide 42 seats, of which 17 are accessible from the low floor. For an efficient exchange of passengers at bus stops, the bus has four double-leaf doors (2+2+2+2). The comfort of passengers will be ensured among others by a full-vehicle air conditioning system, dual USB ports installed in the passenger compartment and Wi-Fi, a passenger information system with bus stop voice announcement.

Further more these Solaris buses feature a fire detection and extinguishing system installed in the engine compartment, a closed-type driver cabin and a video surveillance system with cameras monitoring the door areas, six cameras turned towards the passenger compartment, as well as front and rear-view cameras and a possibility for opening the first doors by using a remote control.

Once this latest order is completed, the Czech city will have nearly 400 Solaris buses on its streets including zero-emission trolleybuses.
