Irizar has presented its first autonomous bus. Spanish city of Malaga had the honour. The City Council of Malaga is pioneering with a mobility project that in a few months will begin to move around the city of Malaga. Irizar has taken up the challenge to implement the autonomous systems into a citybus, the 12 m Irizar ie bus. The zero emissions electric vehicle is equipped with a dual drive mode: manual and automatic (autopilot).

This first Irizar autonomous bus is the fruit of the AutoMost Project funded by the CDTI (Centre for Industrial Technological Development) of the Ministry of Economy of Spain which aims to develop technologies for the automation of vehicles in urban and industrial transport applications. The Irizar Group participates in AutoMost through Irizar e-mobility and group member Datik, operator Avanza participates with 11 partners. The project is also supported by the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Insia, CEIT-IK4 and the University of Vigo.

Malaga will be the first city in Europe to have an autonomous bus of 12 metres long with a capacity for 60 passengers, moving through its streets. It will do so from the port to the city centre and, in principle, will transfer cruise passengers arriving in the capital of Malaga. The bus will use a high-precision positioning and guidance system and will be connected to a control centre from which specific instructions can be sent to each unit and the buses can be monitored and their itineraries accessed in real time.

After three years of work, the pilot test is being launched in Malaga. The major innovation of AutoMost is that it puts a standard size vehicle into circulation in a real traffic situation in a city.

This autonomous bus is one of different projects Irizar is working on to define the lines of the future of mobility by development of technologies and strategies to create modular, flexible and scalable eMobility solutions including smart connectivity, energy storage, autonomous transport and new mobility concepts.
