The Swiss bus manufacturer HESS, in cooperation with the southern Indian state of Kerala, plans to produce locally around 3,000 electric buses by 2025. A similar agreement was signed in June and has now been approved by the Indian central government.

The aim of the Indian central government, as well as Kerala, is to make the climate-friendly electric buses for the public transport a breakthrough in order to reduce the harmful CO2 emissions of internal combustion engines. The Government of Kerala also intends to strengthen local value creation in green technologies. The cooperation with HESS therefore provides for a joint venture: the assembly of the buses will take place on site with technological support from the HESS headquarters in Swiss Bellach.

HESS CEO Alex Naef emphasize the win-win nature of the project: the strengthening of Swiss work and thought space is combined with a technology transfer to emerging India and the creation of numerous sustainable jobs. HESS already has licensees in four continents, which annually produce around 2500 buses with technology from Bellach.
