GVB, the public transport company of Amsterdam, and VDL Bus & Coach signed today the contract for the delivery of 31 electric Citeas. As an extra the contract has an option for another 69 electric Citeas. VDL Bus & Coach will also be responsible for the implementation of the charging infrastructure.

The 31 vehicles are to be used in urban transport in Amsterdam. The project was realized through close cooperation between the Amsterdam Transport Region as a concession provider, the Municipality of Amsterdam, GVB and VDL Bus & Coach.

After previous orders for HTM (The Hague) with eight electric Citeas and RET (Rotterdam) with 55 of these electric city buses, GVB is now the third municipal public transport company in the Netherlands that operates electrically. "It is also the first step GVB is taking to make its bus fleet sustainable," says Alexandra van Huffelen, General Manager of GVB. "I am proud that our first 31 electric buses from VDL are now coming. As a city public transport company we are contributing to cleaner air in Amsterdam and reducing CO2 emissions. In the coming years, we will be replacing our entire bus fleet, some 200 vehicles, with zero-emission buses with which we can transport our passengers comfortably and clean. "From 2020, the new 31 electric Citeas will replace part of the current diesel fleet. The series of 31 electric buses consists of nine Citeas SLF-120 Electric and 22 articulated Citeas SLFA-180 Electric.

The articulated Citea Electric for GVB has 47 seats and the 12-meter Citea is equipped with 31 seats. An additional advantage is that they are much quieter than the diesel buses, which contributes to a better living environment. The climate system is equipped with a heat pump. This modern climate control technology ensures high passenger comfort. Willem van der Leegte, CEO of VDL Groep, is extremely proud that VDL is contributing to the further CO2 reduction in the city and therefore to a cleaner Amsterdam by supplying these electric buses. "It is of course extra special to also supply electric buses to our capital."

The electric Citeas for GVB are fitted with a pantograph and equipped with the latest battery technology. The articulated vehicles, the Citea's SLFA-180, are equipped with a 288 kWh battery pack and the Citeas SLF-120 of 216 kWh. In the timetable, the buses are temporarily recharged via seven fast chargers at Sloterdijk station. During the night the batteries are fully reloaded by 31 depot loaders. The buses are included in the VDL connectivity platform that collects operational data from the buses with which a higher efficiency can be achieved.
