DELHI IS PREPARING TO PROCURE 1000 ELECTRIC BUSES
By this time next year Delhi (India) should have 1,000 electric buses running. At least that is the intention of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi. The first step will be the preparation of Detail Project Report (DPR) for the procurement of this enormous electric bus fleet. Also Delhi is modernising its public transport system by developing a Tool for Bus Ticketing.
The task for making up this report is given to Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Limited (DIMTS) who will also act as the project consultant. The focus will be on the feasibility and procurement of the electric buses. All electric buses will be low floor air-conditioned with 12 meters of length. DIMTS will carry out the critical tasks including identification of routes, depot feasibility, selection of e-bus technology, charging infrastructure, contractual framework and roll-out of the electric bus fleet. According to the latest figures there are only 30 electric buses in India, out of which 25 are operating in Himachal Pradesh and five in Mumbai.
The decision taken by the Delhi cabinet is keeping in mind the pollution issues and public transport needs of the city. According to a spokesman quoted by the The Times of India, the actual cost of electric buses and source of funding would be ascertained after DIMTS carries out its study. Despite this intention to procure electric buses the newspaper mentions a statement made by the Supreme Court which had recently asked Delhi government to ‘leapfrog’ from CNG to hydrogen-run buses instead of procuring electric buses, because it says they are more environment friendly. Delhi’s transport minister Kailash Gahlot said that the transport department has been instructed to study and explore the feasibility of procuring hydrogen-run buses and when that is done, the government will move in that direction too.
Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Ltd., a Joint Venture of Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi & IDFC Foundation, has openend a Request for Qualification and Proposal for Developing a Tool for Bus Ticketing data Analysis and Reporting. (more infromation: https://www.dimts.in)
