DUTCH SECRETARY OF STATE FOR TRANSPORT SAYS BUS LINES ARE GOOD ALTERNATIVE FOR LIGHTRAIL
Dutch Secretary of State for Infrastructure and Transport, Stientje van Veldhoven, has said that public transport by bus like intercity lines and commuter lines are as good as lightrail connections. There is no one-size-fits-all solution, all mobility concepts should be part of the solution, she wrote the Dutch parliament.
She states that to implement lightrail connections large investments are necessary and the projects are or not always as manageable as suggested upfront. Also they are complex and require years of planning. According to Stientje van Veldhoven lightrail is not a solution for projects which need fast realization especially in cities were the growing number of inhabitants ask for new and easy acces to public transport to ensure a good economy and sustainable mobility of people. A bus service can provide just that, she writes, and needs far less investment in infrastructure then a lightrail system requires and also the bus is very flexible. In conjunction with other means of transport like the bicycle, walking, shared car systems and taxi, she sees bus lines and lightrail as part of the mobility solution.
