During a recent news conference Cummins Inc. unveiled plans to enter the electric powertrain market as well as plans for its digital products during a news conference.

Cummins’ Electrification Business Development Executive Director Julie Furber outlined the company’s electrified powertrain plans after touting the company’s 10 years of projects testing powertrains in various commercial applications such as pick-up and delivery, truck and transit bus prototype systems for fully electric, range extended and hybrid vehicles.

While announcing the company’s entry into the electrification market, Cummins said that in addition to continuing to develop technologies in the diesel market, the company will also look at developing products that use alternative fuels.

“In the longer term, there is the possibility of the development of alternative fuels like bio-fuels, synthetic fuels, or hydrogen, which could also drive customers away from diesel, and we’re prepared for these potential changes to occur,” said Cummins Chief Technical Officer Jennifer Rumsey.
