The Jakarta city administration will purchase 489 Mercedes Benz buses and coaches to improve the services of the city-owned public transportation managed by PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta).

The city invited the German automobile maker to join other companies, like Scania and MAN, that could produce high-quality buses to supply vehicles to be deployed along the 12 Transjakarta busway corridors. He said he also invited Hino to offer buses to Transjakarta. Mercedes Benz demonstrated a bus with forward-facing seats as Ahok had demanded.

The city administration has allocated Rp 3.2 trillion (US$ 239.16 million) from the city budget to Transjakarta, said the governor. The city told Mercedes Benz to produce as many buses as possible because the administration needs a lot of them to replace the old ones. He also told the company to provide each bus with a tapping device for paying bus fares.

The city also signed a contract with Mercedes-Benz to carry out maintenance of the buses.
