After the award of 150 Volvo B9TL double-deck buses in 2009, and a further 300 double-deck buses in 2010, Volvo Buses has now secured a further order for 550 Volvo B9TL double deck buses with a value over US$ 200 million. The customer, SBS Transit, has once again opted for environmentally friendly Euro V Volvo engines, although these are not yet a requirement in Singapore, and Wrightbus aluminium bodies.

SBS Transit is one of Volvo Buses’ most important customers. Since 1981, Volvo has delivered more than 2,000 buses to the Company. With this order, Volvo has secured its position as the major supplier of double-deck buses to meet SBS Transit’s new vehicle requirements into 2013.
The order is for 550 double-deckers built on the Volvo B9TL chassis. The chassis will be produced in Borås, Sweden, while the bodywork that is to be made by Wrightbus will be mounted in Singapore. Deliveries will commence in January 2013 and be completed by 2015.
SBS Transit has opted to equip the buses with Volvo D9 engines that comply with Euro V emission legislation that will be introduced in Singapore in 2014.
Bus operator SBS Transit is altogether expecting delivery of 1,000 buses from as early as January 2013. Comprising 450 single-deck Mercedes Citaro buses and 550 double-deck Volvo B9TL Wright buses, the purchase costs SBS Transit S$433 million. It will bring SBS' total fleet size to about 3,400 buses, the largest number to date.
