SOLAR ENERGY COULD MATCH COAL'S PRICE GLOBALLY BY 2020, SAYS REPORT

Published at 22.08.2011 in Alternatives, Environment

In China this situation could already be reached by 2015, a new report from the Chinese government stipulates. It notes that the cost of solar power in that country could drop below 0.80 yuan (0,09 eurocents) per kilowatt-hour by 2015. At that price, solar matches up favorably with coal, the current source for cheap energy.

JEC CONSORTIUM PUBLISHES STUDY ON BIOFUELS

Published at 30.05.2011 in Alternatives, Environment

EUCAR and its partners in the JEC Consortium today published the final report of the JEC Biofuels Programme: “EU renewable energy targets in 2020: Analysis of scenarios for transport”. The JEC Consortium comprises the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, EUCAR (the European Council for Automotive R&D) and CONCAWE (the oil companies' European association for environment, health and safety in refining and distribution). The JEC Consortium investigated the potential for biofuels and other alternative energy sources to achieve the 10% renewable energy target for the EU transport sector by 2020 as mandated by the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED).

FUND WILL INCREASE ENGLAND'S FLEET OF LOW-CARBON BUSES

Published at 14.04.2011 in Public transport, Environment

Government funding of more than £46m will see 542 new low-carbon buses on roads across England by March 2012, according to transport minister Norman Baker. Baker said: ‘Low-carbon buses emit around 30 per cent fewer greenhouse-gas emissions than standard diesel buses and use around a third less fuel — that is why it was so important to kick-start the market.’

The Chinese central government will invest more than 100 billion dollars.

Following increasingly severe environmental pollution, the scarcity of oil and other non-renewable resources and the growing necessity of energy conservation and emissions reductions, renewable energy vehicles have become the latest industry trend.
