ALTERNATIVE FUELS COULD REPLACE FOSSIL FUELS IN EUROPE BY 2050

Alternative fuels have the potential to gradually replace fossil energy sources and make all kinds of transport, including buses and coaches, sustainable by 2050, according to a report presented to the European Commission today by the stakeholder expert group on future transport fuels. The EU will need an oil-free and largely CO2-free energy supply for transport by 2050 due to the need to reduce its impact on the environment and concerns about the security of energy supply.

Trucks and buses meeting Euro V pollution standards emit three times more NOx than they are supposed to in urban areas, according to a Dutch note citing a study released by research institute TNO in February. EU countries may struggle to meet air quality targets as a result, the note states.

The Spanish EU presidency has announced its intention to boost the Electric Vehicles industry in Europe. EVs are the future of transport and the EU should draft a European strategy to address the obstacles facing their implementation. This strategy could be adopted during next spring's competitiveness council.The Spanish EU Presidency presented a discussion paper that puts forward several issues for discussion by the delegations.
