EUROPEAN BIOFUELS PLANS MAY BE IN JEOPARDY

Fresh controversy is mounting within the European Union over biofuels and their unintended impact on tropical forests and wetlands, documents show. One leaked document from the EU's executive, the European Commission, suggests biofuel from palm oil might get a boost from new environmental criteria under development. But another contains a warning from a top official that taking full account of the carbon footprint of biofuels might "kill" an EU industry with annual revenues of around $5 billion.

A ground-breaking California project designed to spur the purchase and use of medium- and heavy-duty hybrids has officially launched with the unveiling of its informational website: www.californiahvip.org, supporting the California Hybrid Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP). It will provide all HVIP details and requirements, and be the electronic portal used in 2010 to request vouchers that help pay for advanced, clean hybrid trucks and buses. HVIP is managed by Calstart and sponsored by the California Air Resources Board (ARB).

It’s found that solution in the form of the Amminex solution. The American truck and bus manufacturer has reached agreement to purchase an interest in Amminex, a Danish company that provides a metal ammine-based NOx reductant delivery system.

Biodiesel, bioethanol and biomethane can meanwhile be produced from a multitude of plants. Besides rapeseed, grains, oil palms and sugarcane, even flora such as the Barbados nut or camelina flowering plant may be considered. The latter two offer the advantage that they will grow on relatively infertile ground, and thus do not compete with the cultivation of food crops—for this is the main complaint about biofuels at the present time.
