A project taking place in Finland could help improve safety for road users driving in the kind of conditions that wreaked havoc across Europe during December and January. INTELLIGENT CCTV SYSTEM FOR BUSES TO PREVENT CRIME

Published at 03.11.2009 in Technology, Safety

Threatening behaviour on buses could soon be tracked and confronted by remote security analysts to protect the public from assaults and other criminal activity. This is the hope of researchers at Queen’s University Belfast who are developing intelligent software to recognise anti-social behaviour from real-time CCTV feeds. Working in collaboration with the Applied Criminology Centre at Huddersfield University, the team plans to use the software to stream live footage to security operators who will then be able to communicate directly with the offender via on-board screens.

VOLVO TO LAUNCH BUS-ADAPTED ALCOLOCK SYSTEM

Published at 12.10.2009 in Public transport, Safety

The new alcolock system from Volvo Buses has been specifically adapted for the bus industry’s requirement for rapid driver changes on route. The vehicle can be started without a breath test, but the brakes will remain locked if the driver is not sober. An increasing number of bus companies are choosing to increase passenger safety by introducing the alcolock system in their buses. The alcolock is a control system that prevents the driver from driving while under the influence of alcohol since a breath test must be taken before starting the bus.
