World CO2 emissions rose 45% between 1990 and 2010 reaching an all-time high of 33 billion tonnes, according to a new report by the EU's Joint Research Centre (JRC). Meanwhile, new research to be published in a leading journal says that large scale removal of CO2 from the atmosphere may be neccessary if emissions keep rising after 2020. The JRC's report says that the increased use of renewables, nuclear power, and better energy efficiency, have not kept up with the world's growing demand for power and transport, which is strongest in developing countries.
US DOE TESTING TO HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF 'CONNECTED' VEHICLES

A number of U.S. government-sponsored tests for connected vehicles will begin next year, providing insight into technical issues and factors such as privacy that will play a major role in determining which projects get a green light for development and deployment. Light vehicles have received most of the attention as field tests for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure included in programs such as the Smart Roadside Initiative draw near, but pilot programs for trucks and buses are now in the spotlight.
DOT TO TEST VEHICLES THAT CAN SEE EACH OTHER

The American Department Of Transport recently announced that the University of Michigan will conduct a road safety field trial of innovative connected vehicle technology that allows vehicles to “see” and “talk” to each other through wireless communication technology in everyday vehicles in a real-time environment. During the pilot, drivers will be alerted to impending dangers in real-time so they can take action to avoid crashes. DOT will collect data from the vehicles in order to understand how different types of motorists respond to safety messages in the real world.
