BORIS JOHNSON DITCHES LONDON'S BENDY BUSES

The bendy buses, London’s terminology for articulated buses, are phased out as TfL figures show they have the worst accident record. The 18m-long vehicles are making way for conventional single-decker and double-decker buses. London's new Mayor, Boris Johnson, has begun phasing out them, fulfilling one of his flagship election pledges earlier this year.

Chinese bus manufacturer Bonluck, focusing on markets like the Australian, American and Irish, has adopted radar scanning and three-point safety belts as an option for its export coaches.

Continental has developed a new tire pressure monitoring systems designed specifically with vehicles like buses in mind. The Intelligent Tire System, with sensors integrated into the tire, continuously oversees the respective pressure and temperature of the tire and is thus able to catch a gradual loss of inflation pressure before it’s too late.

To enhance the on-road safety of buses Continental is launching series production of a driver assist system that monitors the blind spot on the right-hand side of the vehicle and warns of imminent collisions. Continental is thus actively anticipating upcoming statutory regulations – already announced for 2013 – that would make such systems mandatory for heavy commercial vehicles.
NEW TILT TABLE AT MILLBROOK PROVING GROUND

The Millbrook vehicle testing facilitiy in Bedford has added one of Europe's largest tilt tables to its list of testing devices. The newly installed equipment can be used to determine static roll over thresholds and tilt operation capabilities for a wide range of commercial vehicles.
