297 VOLVO BUSES FOR CHILE

Volvo Buses has secured an order for 297 buses to be utilized in the capital of Chile, Santiago. The buses will be used in Transantiago, the city’s efficient public transport system. Santiago is one of an increasing number of cities in the world that has focused on intelligent, bus-based transport systems that are known as BRT, or Bus Rapid Transit. BRT is based on buses with a high passenger capacity, frequent departures, stops that allow passengers to quickly get on and off the bus, and often also separate bus lanes.
MERCEDES DO BRASIL TO SUPPLY BRT UNITS TO BRAZIL

The Brazilian subsidiary of German vehicle manufacturer Mercedes-Benz is looking to supply a large number of units for various Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) schemes due to be implemented in Brazil in time for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The country's Transport Ministry is planning to invest US$4.21 billion in the construction of BRT infrastructure for the tournament, including designated lanes, bus stops and integration with other transport systems.
BEIJING VOWS TO GET MORE PEOPLE ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Beijing will extend its 12 light-rail and subway lines and open more express bus lanes in 2010 in order to get more people out of their cars and on to public transport, said Mayor Guo Jinlong Monday. "Our target is to increase the city's public transport rate to 40 percent this year," he said, while delivering the government's work report to the city's annual legislative session, which opened on Monday.
BRT SERVICES TO BE DEVELOPED IN 20 INDONESIAN CITIES

Bus rapid transit services will be developed in at least 20 cities in Indonesia, including Makassar, Bekasi, Surabaya, Bandung and Tangerang, over the next four years. For 2010, over US$5.6 million has been set aside by the Transportation Ministry to develop and expand bus rapid transit services in Jakarta, Bali, Tangerang and Padang.

The Ahmedabad Janmarg Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) has been hailed as the best mass transit system in the world. Early January 2010, it beat four of the world’s prominent cities in Washington DC to be judged the world’s finest when it bagged the international transport honour - the 2010 Sustainable Transport Award - and proved right the boast made by chief minister Narendra Modi and municipal commissioner IP Gautam that it was a vehicle ‘to move people and not traffic.’
