CATALAN GOVERNMENT APPROVES PASSENGER TRANSPORT PLAN 2008-2012

The government for the Spanish region of Catalonia has approved its Passenger Transport Plan 2008-2012 for the region which sets out the main action points for public transport, both for road and rail. One of the main points of the plan is a 30 per cent increase in bus services.

US: INTELLIGENT INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENTS IN ECONOMIC STIMULUS

A coalition of top US transportation officials and technology leaders have called on Congress to make an “intelligent” infrastructure investment as part of economic stimulus legislation by funding intelligent transportation systems and technologies that will provide lasting improvements to the nation’s economic productivity, transportation infrastructure, and environment while also creating jobs and providing an immediate economic boost.

INVESTMENT IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT SHOULD FORM PART OF EU ECONOMIC RECOVERY PLAN

The EU Committee of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) recently addressed a letter to the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, and the College of Commissioners urging them to include urban and suburban public transport networks in the transport infrastructure investments which are to form part of the European economic recovery plan.

STAGECOACH TO PIONEER BUS BANKCARDS IN LIVERPOOL

Liverpool bus passengers will be the first in the UK to be able to use a bankcard to make on-board payment for travel. Stagecoach, MasterCard and The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) are staging a one-year trial that will see the major roll-out of the technology in the second quarter of 2009 on around 200 Stagecoach buses on 11 routes in Merseyside.

Speakers at the recently held 3rd European Road Congress looked at ways of preparing infrastructure to cater for future mobility demands. These demands were among others formulated as a substantial reduction of road accidents within Europe. It can be achieved through implementing more technology into the vehicles, which will make them costlier.
