SEOUL TO INSTALL GPS DEVICES IN SHORT-HAUL PUBLIC BUSES

South Korea's Seoul city will shortly install GPS devices in short-haul public buses. A total of 1.28 million Euro will be spent on the installation of the Bus Management System in 1,366 village buses, while some of the money will be used to upgrade the CCTV system.

STOCKHOLM SEEKS INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SOLUTIONS

The city of Stockholm is inviting submissions of solutions for its “Intelligent Transport Solutions” challenge. Kista Science City is seeking solutions that are innovative, customer-oriented traveller services to support shifts in mobility patterns, away from cars toward public transport, biking and walking. The winner will be invited to pilot the solution in the city, with full support by all local stakeholders to evaluate the solution before a full-scale roll-out.

CHINA TO CREATE LARGEST MEGA CITY IN THE WORLD

China is planning to create the world's biggest mega city, reports the British newspaper The Telegraph, by merging nine cities to create a metropolis twice the size of Wales with a population of 42 million. The "Turn The Pearl River Delta Into One" scheme will create a 41,400 km2 (6,000 sq mile) urban area that is 26 times larger geographically than Greater London, or twice the size of Wales.

INTERTRAFFIC INDIA 2011 EXHIBITION ANNOUNCED

The Intertraffic exhibition, covering all kinds of services and products relating to road safety,  will make its debut this year in India with the Intertraffic India exhibition to be held in New Delhi from 3-5h October 2011.  The three day event will showcase products and services relating to infrastructure, ITS traffic management, parking, road safety and allied subjects.  The 6th IRF Regional Conference on Road Safety will be held alongside Intertraffic India.

MEGA CITIES ARE A CHALLENGE FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT

A new report from consultancy Frost & Sullivan points to a huge population shift that will require major changes to transport infrastructure worldwide. By 2025, 60% of the world’s population, a projected 4.5 billion, will live in cities according to the Frost & Sullivan report. Existing cities will continue to expand and will incorporate current satellite commuter towns and neighbouring urban areas, increasing the trend to the development of mega cities.
