INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEMS DRIVEN FORWARD

The European Commission has launched a plan intended to ensure that ‘intelligent' transport technologies, which it argues help make road transport safer and greener, are used more widely and consistently across the EU. In an action plan, published on 16 December, the Commission outlines specific plans to boost the use of technologies such as in-vehicle satellite navigation systems, tracking systems for trucks and buses, and electronic toll collection.

GPS SYSTEMS INSTALLED ON PART OF NEW DELHI BUS FLEET

The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) is installing Global Positioning Systems (GPS) on its buses. These GPS systems, already installed in 25 DTC buses, feed details like current location and expected arrival time at various bus stops along the buses’ respective routes, to a central server.

MOOVBOX M SERIES MOBILE BROADBAND GATEWAY DEPLOYED ON GROWING NUMBER OF BUSES AND COACHES

Icomera AB from Sweden, a provider of cellular broadband gateways, and FirstGroup plc, the UK's largest bus and coach operator, have announced the availability of free Wi-Fi Internet access on the RailAir coach service linking Heathrow Airport with Reading in the heart of the UK's technology corridor. A growing number of buses and coaches is fitted with this system, in order to enable internet access on these vehicles.

INITIATIVE IN CALIFORNIA DEFINES ROADMAP FOR SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION

At a press conference held on November 20th 2008 in San Francisco City Hall, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, along with the Mayors of San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland, joined together with the Bay Area Council, the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, and the Better Place organisation of Palo Alto to announce a plan to reinvigorate the state and region’s competitive advantage in innovative technology through public-private investments in electric vehicles and other elements of “green” infrastructure. This new approach challenges conventional assumptions that economic and environmental recovery are at odds with each other, and aligns them, instead.
