BRT SYSTEMS NAMED BEST BUS LINES IN THE U.S.

Los Angeles, Cleveland, Las Vegas, Eugene, Ore. and Pittsburgh were rated as the leading US cities for bus-based transportation because of their high-quality bus rapid transit systems (BRT), according to a new independent study, issued by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP).

London’s transport network will see massive growth in both the number of passengers it carries and the number of services it operates, according to Transport for London’s (TfL) revised Business Plan. During the next four years a huge program of investment will see three Tube lines fully upgraded with new trains on five lines, major progress on Crossrail, the completion of the London Overground network, traffic flow smoothed, the completion of the Barclays Cycle Superhighways and extension of Barclays Cycle Hire, and the maintenance of the capital’s bus network. The plan also sets out an increased savings and efficiencies program, totaling £7.6 billion (US$12 billion), up from around £5 billion (US$8 billion).
CHINA TO CREATE LARGEST MEGA CITY IN THE WORLD

China is planning to create the world's biggest mega city, reports the British newspaper The Telegraph, by merging nine cities to create a metropolis twice the size of Wales with a population of 42 million. The "Turn The Pearl River Delta Into One" scheme will create a 41,400 km2 (6,000 sq mile) urban area that is 26 times larger geographically than Greater London, or twice the size of Wales.
DUBLIN TO GET BUS RAPID-TRANSIT ROUTE

Over 1,000 passengers an hour could be carried each way on a bus rapid transit route in Ireland’s capital, Dublin. The proposed ‘Blue Line’ route, the first bus rapid transit route in Dublin, would run every six minutes at peak times. The system is likely to use Nantes-style bus rapid transit vehicles on a route linking the Sandyford Business Estate with the Dart station at Sydney Parade.
297 VOLVO BUSES FOR CHILE

Volvo Buses has secured an order for 297 buses to be utilized in the capital of Chile, Santiago. The buses will be used in Transantiago, the city’s efficient public transport system. Santiago is one of an increasing number of cities in the world that has focused on intelligent, bus-based transport systems that are known as BRT, or Bus Rapid Transit. BRT is based on buses with a high passenger capacity, frequent departures, stops that allow passengers to quickly get on and off the bus, and often also separate bus lanes.
