The battery packs are destined for hybrid electric transit buses and other commercial vehicles tob e built by Tata. A123 Systems will supply complete lithium-ion battery packs to India’s largest automaker, for Tata’s hybrid electric systems for commercial vehicle applications. A123’s scalable battery packs are designed to fit into multiple powertrain architectures that can be implemented into a wide variety of commercial vehicles, providing Tata with a solution for meeting a variety of performance, range and durability requirements.

In the Chinese city of Ningbo, the port of which has recorded the greatest growth in container business in the world, motor vehicle exhaust emissions has become a major source of urban air pollution; the vehicle population passed 1 million at end 2010. The Ningbo Municipal Development and Reform Commission has set in motion measures to improve the environment and promote energy conservation by introducing a plan to promote conversion to natural gas fuel for urban buses, taxis and port container trucks, reports Ningbo Evening News.
BYD CHANGES STRATEGY

According to reports in US media the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has changed its strategy on this market. Consumers are not its target market for electric vehicles anymore. Fleets are the focus for the North American organisation for BYD’s K9 electric e-Bus and the e6 car.

Recently, Vattenfall opened Europe’s most modern hydrogen station for fuel cell buses and cars in the heart of HafenCity, Hamburg. The hydrogen station in Hamburg is the largest in Europe and a step forward for hydrogen as fuel for transport. The location of the station is in the middle of an urban environment and it caters to both busses and cars.
SMITH ELECTRIC VEHICLES AND WANXIANG GROUP ANNOUNCE JOINT VENTURE FOR ELECTRIC SCHOOL BUSES

Smith Electric Vehicles Corp. has signed a letter of intent with Wanxiang Group, a China-based automotive parts manufacturer and supplier. The principal terms include a $25-million equity investment in Smith by Wanxiang and up to a $75-million investment in a joint venture between Smith and Wanxiang to develop, manufacture and commercialize all-electric school buses and commercial vehicles for multiple industries in China.
