DOES QUEBEC PUBLIC TRANSPORT GO ALL-ELECTRIC?
Proposals have been forwarded for the Canadian city of Quebec to reduce CO2 emissions through the implementation of a public transport system using electric power only. The plans call for the city’s public transport system to switch completely to electric power by 2030. This forms part of a strategy for the city to cut its CO2 emissions by 20% by 2020.
It is not clear yet which types of vehicles would be used. Whether for example the proposals would include electric trolley buses running from overhead power lines or battery vehicles, although the latter seems at least one likely component of the strategy.
Part of the public transport in mainly the oldpart of Quebec, is already carried out with battery-electric vehicles. Eight small electric buses, designed to easily traverse Old Quebec's narrow streets, are in service under Transport Canada's Urban Transportation Showcase Program. Investing in these electric buses also underscores the government's resolve to reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution. The buses help keeping the air clean, improve quality of life, and respect the physical heritage of Old Quebec.
