Published at 13.01.2009 in Infrastructure

The government for the Spanish region of Catalonia has approved its Passenger Transport Plan 2008-2012 for the region which sets out the main action points for public transport, both for road and rail. One of the main points of the plan is a 30 per cent increase in bus services.

Further plans are  the creation of five new high speed rail lines; the creation of new intercity rail lines in Lleida, Girona and Tarragona; works to improve accessibility to public transport for people with disabilities; the setting up of new intercity bus lanes; new bus stations and stops; and the extension of public transport pricing integration throughout the region by 2012.

A total of US$ 1.15 billion will be spent on passenger road transport services, while the investment for rail transport will be determined by the central government, which is responsible for rail transport services firm, Renfe.
