Published at 23.07.2008 in Infrastructure, Mass transit

As part of a multidisciplinary team, Iteris has been selected by the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) to implement a real-time transit passenger information system and to develop the design for an advanced transit signal priority system for three Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors in Orange County, California. Work is expected to begin on the project immediately.

OCTA plans to implement bus rapid transit services along three corridors in Orange and Los Angeles Counties by the end of 2010 that will combine to form a system that is nearly 120kms long with approximately 110 station stops spaced approximately one mile apart.

"The OCTA Bus Rapid Transit Program demonstrates how ITS elements such as real-time passenger information systems and advanced transit signal priority systems can contribute to the successful deployment of modern public transit services in our urbanized areas," said Abbas Mohaddes, Iteris' president and chief executive officer.

The features of a real-time Bus Rapid Transit system include: frequent service, limited stops, real-time passenger information obtained by voice response telephone and web-based systems as well as postings on dynamic message signs at bus stops, branded buses, enhanced bus stop shelters, and advanced transit signal priority systems.
