TROLLEY SYSTEM FOR MEXICO CITY
Mexico's federal district government (GDF) will invest US$173 million to purchase 12 electric trolleys for Mexico City, local press reported. The new trolleys are expected to start operations in 2010, covering a 28-station, 10.8km route that will connect the city's historic center and Buenavista districts.
In addition, the trolleys will provide connections with the city's suburban train and metro lines 1, 2, 3 and 8, as well as other mass transportation systems. Each train will consist of two passenger cars capable of transporting 70 seated and 170 standing passengers. The system is expected to handle 50,000 daily passengers.
The GDF will tender call to build the first line of the system in September. The system will be concessioned under a pay-for-service model, in which the authority will be required to provide a monthly payment over the course of 25 years. The amount has yet to be determined but will depend on the quality of the service and maintenance provided by the concession winner.
