ECOMOTORS SAYS ITS OPOC ENGINE COULD DELIVER ABOUT 45% GREATER FUEL EFFICIENCY

EcoMotors International, a Khosla-funded startup working to commercialize an opoc (opposed-piston, opposed-cylinder) engine family showcased its EM100 (100mm cylinder bore) base module implementation at the ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit in Washington DC last week. With a two-module application configured at the appropriate power level (to deliver a combined 480 hp), the opoc unit could deliver about 45% better fuel efficiency compared to a conventional heavy-duty diesel engine in a Class 8 truck or in a coach, the company suggests, while delivering emissions at the US Tier 2 Bin 5 level (the 50-state level in the US for diesel light duty vehicles).

HINO BUS ASSEMBLY IN INDIA DELAYED

The joint venture between Hino Motors Ltd, the commercial vehicle arm of Toyota Motor Corp., and Japanese trading firm Marubeni Corp. had to defer its December 2009 launch because of a delay in the so-called homologation process, said Amol J. Sandil, executive vice-president, Hino Motors Sales India. Hino plans to import the buses in semi-knocked-down form from the parent firm’s Thailand factory. JCBL India Pvt. ANKAI SUPPLIES BUSES FOR THE WORLD EXPO IN SHANGHAI

Doubledeckers and electric full-size buses will be supplied by Ankai to Shanghai, as part of the transportation for the World Expo, which starts neginning May. In the summer of 2009, Ankai Best electric buses attracted already a lot of attention during the Dalian Davos Conference. Ankai Bus obtained an order of 14 Ankai Best electric tourist buses from Shanghai World Expo.

DOES QUEBEC PUBLIC TRANSPORT GO ALL-ELECTRIC?

  Proposals have been forwarded for the Canadian city of Quebec to reduce CO2 emissions through the implementation of a public transport system using electric power only. The plans call for the city’s public transport system to switch completely to electric power by 2030. This forms part of a strategy for the city to cut its CO2 emissions by 20% by 2020.

CNG-FUELLED BUS COMPLETES 322,000 KM ALTOONA TEST WITH SUCCESS

A Creative Bus CNG installation on a Ford bus recently completed the demanding North-American Altoona Bus Test without any unscheduled maintenance or repairs to the CNG fuel system. Built on the Ford E-450 chassis, the cutaway bus is 25′ in length and has a passenger capacity of twenty one. The proprietary compressed natural gas fuel system was designed and installed in California by Creative Bus Sales, a company that specializes in CNG bus conversions.
